Rob Lowe's Plea for Film and TV Production to Return to Los Angeles
Rob Lowe, the renowned actor, has expressed his frustration over the shift of film and television production away from Los Angeles, a trend that has seen other cities and countries become more attractive for filming due to financial incentives. Lowe, who has been vocal about this issue, believes that the state of filming in Hollywood is improving, but it's still concerning that the industry has largely moved elsewhere.
Lowe's concern is particularly focused on the financial aspect, stating, 'A large part of the budget for tax credit is above the line, which includes the salaries of actors, writers, directors, and producers. Other territories offer tax credits for these above-the-line expenses, which Los Angeles does not. Until they do, it will be challenging to bring back the big shows.'
Despite the challenges, Lowe was able to stay in Los Angeles for his latest movie, 'The Musical,' which is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Directed by Giselle Bonilla and written by Alexander Heller, the film is a comedy about a frustrated playwright and middle school teacher, Doug (played by Tony-winner Will Brill), who discovers his ex-girlfriend, a fellow educator, is dating the principal of their school (Lowe). Driven by spite, Doug stages an inappropriate school musical to sabotage the principal's chances of winning an award for academic excellence.
Heller shared, 'We thought a lot about 'School of Rock' if it were filmed like 'Apocalypse Now.' That guided us for a long time.'
The film's cast and crew pushed against the Hollywood adage, 'Never work with children or animals.' Brill described the inclusion of young actors as one of the most daring aspects of the film. Lowe, who was once a kid actor himself, found it enjoyable and satisfying to be around kids, recalling the challenges they faced in getting the parts they wanted in the musical.
The theme of spite is woven throughout 'The Musical,' with the cast and creative team drawing inspiration from petty experiences. Lowe shared a humorous anecdote about an incident where an actor tried to distract him during an award ceremony, highlighting the competitive nature of the industry.
Bonilla also shared a personal story of how a petty act from her past had a positive impact on her career, revealing that she submitted a film out of spite and got into film school, which led her to her current position.
Despite the challenges, Lowe remains hopeful that Los Angeles can regain its position as the center of film and TV production, emphasizing the importance of financial incentives and support for the industry.
